Re: [FAIR-HILL-MD-NATURE-PHOTOGRAPHY-meetup-group] Whats the story with the Membership Dues??

Thank you for your letter.   I think providing resources to members is a very good thing.  However, with increased fees comes increased accountability for how these fees are to be spent.   I do not know how many members we have and what the total amount would be if everyone paid the increased fee.  If it is a substantial amount then a more formal balance sheet of revenue and expenses would probably make people feel more at ease.   In the alternative, perhaps there could be two levels of members... those who just want to come to meet ups would pay the current fee and those that want to have access to additional resources could pay a higher fee.  A vote for these options could be put out to all members rather than an arbitrary decision being made.  I am a relatively new member and have not decided yet if the increased fee is something I want to pay.
On another note.... I enjoy the meetups when they are organized in a fashion that people feel they are part of a collective group.  As an organizer you do spend alot of personal time to think of the meetups and communicate with members about them.  Perhaps as the group gets bigger you will need more assistance in communicating with members about the logistics of meetup times, locations and transportation.  I would be happy to volunteer in some way to ease this burden.

Subject: [FAIR-HILL-MD-NATURE-PHOTOGRAPHY-meetup-group] Whats the story with the Membership Dues??

I have always said that this group is far larger than the sum of its individual members.  It is the unity of kindred spirits who all have a passion for photography and a willingness to share that makes this group so different, so amazing.
A couple of months ago, we started thinking about how we can collectively use the power of this group to gain access to great educational and training resources.  We started thinking about how this group's activities are not limited to physical meetups.  Remember, some of the best shots taken this year were during those silly 'Emulate the masters series...'.
So we thought, let us see if we can create a true platform where folks like us can collectively be transformed to the next level.  There are some amazing resources available on the web for photographers.  I am talking about formal classes on lighting and posing given by folks like John Greengo to a 10 week session on  wedding photography thought by the queen of wedding Photography Bambi Catrel.
Getting these things so that our members can collectively have access is going to be expensive (not un-Godly expensive, but expensive).  So we thought, hey, let us raise our dues from 10 to 25 (which is still a bargain).  This would give us the resources needed to implement the things we want to do.
In addition, we wanted to start renting studio space in places like the Grafitti Warehouse in Baltimore and others.  There really is no substitute for learning how to shoot people than having the right lighting and models who know what they are doing.  Again, this takes money....
Bottom line is this:  We want to take this group to the next level.  Both in the vitrual and real world.  Doing this is important to me.  However it is not as important as loosing folks who are the heart and soul of this little group.
With all my love and admiration
