One of America’s preeminent First Amendment, civil rights and criminal defense attorneys, H. Louis Sirkin is best known locally for repeated defenses of Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt and his 1990 defense of the Contemporary Arts Center on criminal obscenity charges for presenting the Robert Mapplethorpe photography exhibition. A former president of the First Amendment Lawyers Association and UC law professor, Sirkin will speak to FIG about the First Amendment’s constitutionally mandated separation of government and religion.
