Once again, celebrating Global FAT Bike Day in the Pocono Mountain Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Different start location and route than last year, but same FAT FUN!
All Fat and Plus Bikes Welcome. (Skinny tire bikes welcome too! We’ll ride with anyone, but be warned we will try to convert you to the world of FAT!)
Very easy access from Mahoning Valley Exit of northeast extension of PA Turnpike from either north or south direction. Lehighton Trailhead of Delaware & Lehigh Trail is approximately 3 miles northwest from the interchange. Ample parking at the Trailhead with additional parking at the PA Dept. of Welfare Office, 101 Lehigh Drive, Lehighton, PA adjacent to the trailhead.
This year's route is a flat out and back rail trail ride down to the Slatington Trailhead and back to Lehighton. Round trip is approximately 20 flat miles on mostly gravel 1% grade rail bed trail with a little pavement and a few road crossings. You can shorten or extend your ride since it's an out and back route. Optional Climb up to the LNE Trail in Bowmanstown.
Note: There is a group planning to ride on from Slatington south to Cementon for a total 40 mile out and back ride. It will also extend their ride time to around 2 pm.
Group photo around 10 am just before mass start, so please arrive at least 15-30 minutes early to be ready to ride.
Suitable for all skill levels and family friendly. Not a race, go at your own pace. Lots of opportunities for photo ops and side adventures!
Plenty of rest stops, bathroom facilities and convenience stores along the route. Near the start/finish Lehighton Outdoor Center will be open and we’ll have access to their restrooms and shower facilities and their cafe and full service bike shop are open.
Post ride lunch options right by the trailhead including Bonnie & Clyde's Pub, Joker's Wild Game Cafe, etc.
Bring your family and spend the day or weekend in neighboring Jim Thorpe as their Santa excursion train is running in the Lehigh Gorge and shops and restaurants are open and decorated for the holidays.
You can also explore other sections of the D&L Trail and the mountain bike trail system just north of Jim Thorpe on your own.
