What we're about

YOU are an LA woman over 40! And WE are adventurous, imaginative, enthusiastic women over 40 who are insatiably curious about the people and places that make up our magical mosaic called Los Angeles. We want to go where we haven’t gone and do what we haven’t done. And we’re as diverse as this city we love! You are welcome as you are, and no one is judged.

Together, we’ll deep-dive into arts, music, dance, comedy, history, architecture, variety arts, craft fairs, antique districts, flea markets, local festivals, and all manner of culture and counterculture. Of course, we’ll find fun and fabulous places to eat and drink along our way. We want our activities to be as varied as our membership.

We're also extremely proud of our three signature event series:

1) Cocktails in Unique Places (CUP) -- our signature event, 2) A historical based event, and 3) our casual Neighborhood Nights where we can relax, connect, and build great friendships.

And your ideas are always welcome! YOU can be an event organizer! We're always happy to help you make your event sparkle!

Some events will be free. But for others, we may ask for a small fee to cover Meetup expenses. (And of course, if you like our group vibe, you’re always welcome to make a donation on your own!) Some events may have limits on the number of people the venue will allow. But we’ll always try to have a waitlist.

Just a few rules to remember:

For the safety of all our members, we require a clear profile photo OF YOU ALONE, OF YOUR FACE (facing the camera!) NO HATS OR SUNGLASSES! -- SORRY, BUT NO EXCEPTIONS!

If you RSVP and then don’t cancel more than 24 hours before at 4 events, we’ll have to show you out of the group for four months. But that won’t happen because you’ll update your RSVPs and cancel with at least 24 hours notice! Right?

And if you RSVP and we never see you that’s a NO SHOW even if you were there and did your own thing. 3 no-shows and we will remove you from the group for six-months.

No-shows and Last-minute cancellations put our ability to book terrific venues at risk! Your event organizers and sister members will appreciate your courtesy especially when there's a wait list.

Be kind and welcoming to everyone you meet here. We ask that you never contact group members you haven’t met in person. Don’t send group emails for any reason. Be respectful in the comments.

So come join us! There’s a world of new friends here that can’t wait to meet you!

SMOKE HOUSE

In 1948, the Smoke House Restaurant moved up the street to it's present day location, taking over what was then the Red Coach Inn. Originally built in 1947 by Danny Kaye, the Red Coach Inn never opened as a restaurant because Kaye couldn't build a large enough dance floor in the space.

The Smoke House Restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants in Burbank with a long going connection to the Hollywood crowd. When the original restaurant opened you could see such stars as Bob Hope, who was a Burbank resident, as well as Bing Crosby. Because of the restaurants proximity to both Warner Bros. and the Disney Studios you could see any number of stars.

It wasn't unusual to see stars like Errol Flynn, Milton Berle or Judy Garland. During the filming of East of Eden, Burl Ives would pick up his young costar James Dean and they would sometimes head to the Smoke House for lunch or dinner. Many Disney animators and stars have also come to the Smoke House because of being close to work.

Even today the Smoke House Restaurant attracts stars. Andy Garcia and George Clooney are frequent visitors. Clooney in fact enjoys the restaurant so much that he named his production company after the business: Smokehouse Productions.

The restaurant has appeared to change very little over the years. The inside feels like you are stepping back in time, with the red booths and old-fashioned telephone jacks at the table (in case you got an important call).

The Smoke House's world famous garlic cheese bread is always a must try! It's delicious!

MEETUP POLICY: Payment made within 24-hrs. No reminders! Waitlists are generally long for popular events. Please don’t hold up space if you are not committed. Join the waitlist instead closer to the date. Let’s give others a fair chance! Thank you!

Dia de Los Muertos (day of the dead) is one of Mexico’s most colorful traditional holidays, which reunites and honors beloved ancestors, family & friends. It is believed that on Dia de Los Muertos, the living commune with the dead- it is a mystical time when the veil is lifted between their two realms, so that they may share a day together.

The cemetery comes to life with joyful celebration, as a vibrant procession featuring hundreds of Aztec ritual dancers weaves through the cemetery.

Happy Hours (with rare exceptions) don’t have an RSVP deposit. Please ONLY sign-up if you are serious about attending. Please be courteous to those on the waitlist and your HOST and update your RSVP if you need to cancel. It’s the only fair chance others have in getting into events. COCKTAILS IN UNIQUE PLACES (CUP) AT HISTORIC FIRE ENGINE 56

Dinner and drinks in a restored 1920’s fire station. The Historic Fire House #56 Edendale Grill (like the Firestone Tire Building- Brewery event) is another fantastic example of a repurposed space rich in history and character beautifully restored to maintain the integrity of the former space we can all enjoy today. These historic LA gems are what I love so much, and search out in great length to learn more about in an effort to share with you!

EDENDALE

Silver Lake, Los Feliz and parts of Echo Park was once known as Edendale. It was here that trick rider and silent western star Tom Mix filmed his first of many movies in 1910, later developing Mixville- his 12 acre western town and movie Studio. Not much is left of Edendale but a few buildings that still carry the name such as the Edendale Branch Library, Edendale Post Office in Echo Park and the Edendale Grill in Silver Lake.

The Edendale Grill opened in 2002 by Patti Peck and Melanie Tusqeullas in former Los Angeles Fire Department Station 56. It took these dedicated women more than two years to restore the 1924 abandoned firehouse to its pristine condition with its hardwood floors and original tin ceiling in the attached Mixville Bar which was restored to its former past.

The bar has a long mahogany bar top with stools and comfy club chairs. It once housed the station's fire truck. The reception area of the restaurant is a virtual historical museum of Edendale with framed photos of famous silent movie stars and filming locations in Silver Lake and Echo Park. The original owners truly did a remarkable job bringing the past alive. Resident bartender Eddie Ebell took ownership in 2010.

See photo gallery.

HAPPY HOUR (ENDS AT 7 PM) & DINNER

https://www.theedendale.com/menus/

We will be dining in their REAR PATIO (not street side). The varied menu includes their delicious Tarragon Blue Cheese Fries, fresh salads, sandwiches, dinner entrees and desserts. One of their suggested cocktails is the Pimm's Cup- a concoction of James Pimm's created in 1840 as a digestive aid made with Pimms # 1 Cup, ginger ale, cucumbers and citrus. Of course you can order your regular favorite if you're not feeling particularly adventurous.
