In-the-Field Mini Workshop

Street Photography for Beginners

In-the-Field Mini Workshops are a great way to extend your photographic skill sets. The workshops are all held on location and are limited in size to just 10 students. Instruction is provided by FCCP faculty and usually an assistant instructor. The 5 to 1 student/instructor ratio means there will be lots of learning going on, but there'll be plenty of laughs as well.

St. Petersburg has the most vibrant and active downtown in the area. There is something always happening in the downtown. We'll explore the areas around Straub Park, historic Central Avenue and some of the many alleys and backstreets. Let FCCP's instructors get you started on the path to success in this mini workshop that covers all the basics of street photography.

The mini workshop starts with a short orientation and then proceeds to the starting location. The next 3 to 4 hours are spent learning basic camera settings (exposure, metering and focus) compositional techniques for great street shots.. During this time the group will move around to different locations to insure that the students learn under different light conditions and environments. Students will be encouraged to anticipate the action and expand their photographer's eye.

Brief critiques in-the-field will be given by the instructor or assistant. However, after the event a special gallery will be setup on the FCCP site for the students to upload their images (limit of 10) to receive a more extensive critique from the instructor. Also, following the workshop students will be sent via email a list of followup material that will aid the student that wants to advance further with their composition education. Twice a year an advanced workshop will be given in composition for the dedicated student.

An optional lunch will follow at a nearby restaurant. Cost of the lunch is at the students expense.

Required for the workshop

Student should have a working knowledge of their camera including familiarity with menus and camera settings. This is a great followup to our FCCP Beginning Photography Bootcamps.

Student must bring a dSLR or Point-n-Shoot camera

It is recommend that the student have a telephoto lens in the 200mm to 300mm range and a wide angle lens in the 15mm to 35mm range

Please do not bring a tripod, this is street photography and handholding techniques will be taught
