The public website is at: Fluoride-Free-Quad-Cities.org/
Fluoride Free Quad-Cities is a group of local people who have learned that there are many types of fluoride: a pharmaceutical-grade Sodium Fluoride, which is used in dental products; and another type of fluoride - an industrial-grade Hydrofluorosilicic Acid, which is a toxic by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry.
The toxic by-product - Hydrofluorosilicic Acid, is the type of fluoride used in our tap water. It comes in liquid form and is the cheapest form of fluoride. It is the type of fluoride that is purchased by our water company - Iowa American Water - to fluoridate our tap water.
Davenport and some surrounding towns (Bettendorf, Davenport, Riverdale) have been fluoridated since July 1952. Eldridge was fluoridated in Oct 1968; LeClaire in Oct 2003.
New published research has proven that fluoride in any form can have harmful effects to the human body over a long period of time - if swallowed.
There is a warning label on the back of all fluoridated toothpaste brands explaining this.
Our group wishes to bring this important new published research into the public's awareness. Therefore we encourage those in charge of this practice to consider the entire scope of the fluoridation issue, again because of the abundance of new information that was not available when it was started in 1952.
This "fluoridation issue" parallels dangers uncovered from lead added to gasoline; and the lung damage in workers exposed to asbestos; and cancer and emphysema from tobacco use.
In each situation, the safety factor was re-considered for these products. Data compiled over a number of years proved that long-term exposure to these products were unsafe. The products were either banned or controlled.
We encourage you to join us in our effort to eliminate the harmful fluoride - Hydrofluorosilicic Acid from our municipal drinking water.
After 60 years of Davenport's local water fluoridation program, and because of the abundance of new information that many scientist are confirming fluoride's long-term harmful effects on our bodies, ending this practice of fluoridation of our tap water will benefit everyone, now and in the future.
Just since 2010, more than 70 cities have stopped fluoridating their tap water.
Here is a partial list of locations that have stopped fluoridation:
Casadaga and Lily Dale
Prairie Du Chien
St. Croix Falls
98% of Europe does not fluoridate.
(Fluoridated salt is available for purchase in some countries)
To keep informed on this important water fluoridation issue across in our country and around the world, please subscribe to Dr. Paul Connett's 'Fluoride Action Network' at: www.FluorideAlert.org/.
The are a number of recently published books available about the latest research and opinions on this water fluoridation topic.
Two of the best books are: The Fluoride Deception (2004) by Christopher Bryson, and The Case Against Fluoride (2010) co-authored by Dr. Paul Connett, Dr. James Beck, and Dr. H.S. Micklem.
Dr. Connett recommends Bryson's well-documented book as an excellent source of the background history of fluoride. The scientific studies that Bryson uncovered show what fluoride does to the human body and that the research about fluoride going on before and during WWII was suppressed. Later when water fluoridation was encouraged and it swept the country in the 1950s, there were many scientists who spoke out against it; they were also suppressed. Bryson discovered information that was recently released into the public arena, and those findings were alarming.
Connett's co-authored book can be looked as "part 2" to Bryson's information.
Connett's 2010 book presents the newest scientific research from around the world.
New scientific research is continuously being published.
A new Harvard University study published on July 24th, 2012 says that childrens' IQs are affected by exposure to Fluoride; it stated, "Our studies support the possibility of adverse affects of fluoride exposures on children's neurodevelopment."
The word "possibility" in science means more research will follow. This should give rise to caution about water fluoridation since it can effect children's developing brains!
Interestingly enough, few countries have ever fluoridated their water. And by not doing so, it is easy to look back at the dental and overall health of those populations and compare it to our own country's dental and overall health - especially of our children. We are not "better" in dental care.
If "better teeth for our children" was the rationale to fluoridate our tap water originally, why would the local water works add Hydrofluorosilicic Acid that has now been proven to be harmful in so many ways to everyone who drinks it.
One way to think of this issue: You would not swallow sunblock to protect yourself against sunburn; you would apply it directly to your skin.
