What we're about

Due to the COVID Pandemic, the Frederick Meditation Center had to shut down our tranquil refuge in the heart of downtown Frederick. We continue to exist via Zoom offering group and private meditation classes and workshops. People new to meditation as well as those with a meditation practice are welcome to join. All people are welcome.

Most of our classes are offered by donation. These priceless teachings should be offered to all. Please donate what you can. We ask that you please sign up at least 24 hours in advance by visiting our schedule page (http://frederickmeditation.com/classes)or giving us a call at 240-397-8080.

About this Class:

“We have the opportunity, even in difficult times, to let our spirit shine” — Jack Kornfield

These are intense times. Our growing anxiety maybe amplified by the uncertainty of not knowing when the COVID-19 pandemic will be over. Yet this is exactly why we practice. As more and more of us work from home during this pandemic, I’d like to offer this daily meditation class as a refuge of calm. Coming together via Zoom is one way to stay connected, and deepen our practice.

We meditate so we can be aware what is here and be present with our experience. We remember the timeless truths of the teachings by bringing compassion and presence to our own experience. We start to create islands of calm and sanity in our world.

More than ever, we need to find ways of creating calm, tranquility, loving-friendliness and compassion for the suffering in ourselves and in our world. My heart goes out to all those affected — whether by illness, isolation of preventive measures, or resulting personal and professional hardships.

Above all, I wish for the health and the safety of you and your loved ones as we navigate this global challenge.

Are you stressed and tense due to the pandemic?

Would you like to learn to “let go” of your anxiety?

Would you like to me more relaxed?

Searching for a path that leads to positivity and joy?

The intention of this group is to explore the Buddhist Heart Practices, also called the Four Immeasurables or the Brahma-viharas. These mindfulness practices of loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity represent the most beautiful and hopeful aspects of our human nature by transforming the turbulent heart into a calm refuge of focused awareness. They protect the mind from falling into habitual patterns of reactivity and help keep us in balance. They awaken powerful healing energies, which brighten and lift the heart and mind to increasing levels of clarity. As a result, these boundless heart qualities can be truly centering and transformative.

Vipassana or Insight Mediation cultivates two wings of the practice: Wisdom and Compassion. Wisdom is the concentration we develop to see clearly, to see what truly exists. Compassion is the wing of non-judging, accepting what comes to us with an open heart and mind. This class will focus on strengthening the wing of Compassion through the Heart Practices.

The weekly class led by Ray Manyoky will generally include:

A brief talk on the Heart Practices
30 minute meditation
Check-in/discussion
Closing mediation
