Trip #4. Hike and clear Gateway west toward Campfire Lake on the Pow Wow trail

Details

Join Lucas and Rick on a three night backpacking clearing trip to the historic Powwow Trail north of Isabella, Minnesota. Cleared in May 2018 and last seen in July 2018, the trail west of the loop intersection offers areas of scenic, open hiking and some sections with plentiful new tree falls to clear. Armed with geared loppers and lightweight Japanese Silky saws, our crew will clear West - towards Campfire Lake.

ITINERARY: Thursday, May 2: We will carpool from the Twin Cities area to the Lake Isabella Pow Wow Trail entry point. We will hike into the Lake Isabella campsite (about 1 mile) and spend the night.
Friday, May 3: Hike to Flapper creek area, make camp and 1/2 day clearing pushing west to Campfire Lake.
Saturday, May 4: Full day of clearing towards Campfire Lake.
Sunday, May 5: A couple hours of clearing, hike out and travel back to the Twin Cities.

WHAT TO EXPECT: This is a backpacking trip in the wilderness. Each participant will carry their own pack, shelter, sleep system, food, personal gear and a clearing tool. BWAC may have gear to share or borrow. Participants should be in good physical shape and have a "can-do" attitude for unknown trail and weather conditions.

RSVP here for crew member orientation on April 11:

Trail clearing experience is not required or expected: BWAC provides all tools and safety training for our crews. We will have a hike locally during April to meet each other and conduct a gear check for major gear components: footwear, pack, rain gear, layers, sleep system, tent. Your crew leaders will make sure you bring what you need to be safe and comfortable, and will have suggestions for lightweight gear. Gear list here: https://www.meetup.com/Friends-of-BWCA-Trails/pages/23715529/August_16-20,_2017_Canoe-in_to_the_Powwow_Trail

WHY VOLUNTEER? You will make new friends, share your skills and learn new skills from your crew, and have an unforgettable experience helping restore a fire-damaged legacy trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
