Hike Whitney Pocket Overlook with Jim Boone

The Whitney Pocket Overlook route (via Raven Ridge) starts in the First Rock Camp area and runs 3.2 miles following gravel roads across the desert. There is no trail up the steep side of Raven Ridge, but once atop Raven Ridge, the views are surprisingly grand for a relatively low ridge. On Raven Ridge, an old road runs at mostly easy grades, past several nice overlooks to end at an overlook with great views east over the Whitney Pocket area. From the overlook, the route returns over the same route with a variation that makes a partial loop and shortens the return hike. Returning directly from the top of Raven Ridge is not a better route back to the trailhead.

This hike is rated as moderate, and you will need to bring lunch for yourself, plenty of water, and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, sunscreen and a hat. It is best to dress in layers as the weather can be unpredictable at this time of year. Meet at the junction of Gold Butte Rd. and Highway 170 at 8:45 to sign in, and then we'll caravan to the trailhead.
