What we're about

👩🏫 TALK & SPEAKER INFO 👨🏫
Talk #1: The future of UI is "open" by Brecht De Ruyte
When dealing with more advanced UI elements there are a lot of things that go wrong. They impact performance, accessibility and have the tendency to create frustrations along the way.
In this talk, I will be introducing you to the W3C community around Open UI, while also taking a little detour with the Anchoring API. By combining these future specs we'll take a peek at the future of styling custom UI by only using HTML and CSS, giving you less frustration, performance boosts and basic accessibility out of the box.
About Brecht
Brecht De Ruyte is a self-taught front-end developer located in Belgium with a passion for UX and Design. After more than a decade of working in tech, he started writing down his findings about HTML, CSS, and JS with an eye on accessibility and UX. During the day, you can find him working at iO Ghent on various projects. There are a lot of environments he is working in, the majority of them being Twig and React. But Brecht’s real niche will always be semantics and CSS, especially now, with the ever-fast updates in browser support.
Talk #2: See Me, Hear Me, Include Me: A Journey through Disability and Web Accessibility by Rune Devuyst
We'll begin by exploring the various types of disabilities and their challenges, including my personal experience. From there, we'll examine the challenges people with disabilities face online and look at simple, effective ways to make websites more accessible. We'll also highlight some low-hanging fruit that can be easily implemented such as common mistakes developers make and their solutions.
By the end of this talk, you'll (hopefully =]) have a deeper understanding of disability and web accessibility and feel motivated to take action toward a more inclusive and accessible world.
About Rune

She believes the web should be accessible to everyone and strives to make this a reality through her work. Additionally, Rune takes an active role in educating and guiding others on these subjects.
