Feb 2014: The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner

We will discuss The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner.

The Amazon description:

"Part foreign affairs discourse, part humor, and part twisted self-help guide, The Geography of Bliss takes the reader from America to Iceland to India in search of happiness, or, in the crabby author's case, moments of "un-unhappiness." The book uses a beguiling mixture of travel, psychology, science and humor to investigate not what happiness is, but where it is.

Are people in Switzerland happier because it is the most democratic country in the world? Do citizens of Qatar, awash in petrodollars, find joy in all that cash? Is the King of Bhutan a visionary for his initiative to calculate Gross National Happiness? Why is Asheville, North Carolina so damn happy?

With engaging wit and surprising insights, Eric Weiner answers those questions and many others, offering travelers of all moods some interesting new ideas for sunnier destinations and dispositions."

At the conclusion of the discussion, we will be voting on a nonfiction book for the April meeting. Please research these titles and be ready to cast an educated vote.  The three candidate books are:

Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S. C. Gwynne

The Big Thirst: The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water by Charles Fishman

Ranger Confidential: Living, Working, and Dying in the National Parks by Andrea Lankford

I really like how we stay with the book. I've heard of "book discussion" groups that seem to do everything except discuss the book.

I really enjoyed this discussion and the book. Very enjoyable evening - and my favorite carrot cake topped it off - thanks Alisa!

Sorry to change my RSVP on such late notice. I have been trying to fight a cold all week, and it still seems to be winning! I enjoyed the chapters of the book that pertained to places I was interested in, but the other chapters were a bit tedious. Hopefully my absence will make things a little roomier for everyone else! Sorry to miss it!

Sorry. I have apparently added too many new things to my schedule at once and need to choose exercise right now over book club. I loved the book. Hope you enjoy the discussion.

I'm in the same boat as Melissa. Not anywhere close to being done, and having a hard time staying interested in this book. I'll see everyone next month!

Sorry to miss the discussion with everyone but came down with something Friday and don't want anyone to catch what I have.

Just got the book yesterday. Doesn't look like I'll finish in time... really slow (i.e. uninteresting) reading for me.
