In October and November, Johannesburg and Pretoria/ Tshwane residents witness the magnificent jacaranda tree blooms that beautify the province purple each year. From the Capital City to Kensington, the blooms carpet the streets and walkways in soft and fragrant decoration.

During flowering season 'Jacaranda City' aka Pretoria, takes on a purple tinge due to the huge number of jacaranda trees alongside its streets and many parks. The flowering period coincides with year-end exams at Pretoria universities and schools – and urban legend says that, if a flower falls on your head as you walk underneath a jacaranda, you will pass all your exams.

Kensington has hundreds of jacaranda trees and walking its streets or a walk in Rhodes Park is a must in October - November each year.

Gauteng isn’t the only region in the world to boast such beauty - Grafton, Australia, holds a yearly Jacaranda Festival in early November. Residents are invited to enjoy the local public holiday as they take part in a street parade and fun festivities when the trees are in full bloom.

The resort coastal towns in the Algarve (Portugal), Madeira and the South of Spain are well known for their magnificent Jacarandas.
