August book discussion - Orient by Christopher Bollen
*RSVPs open July 25th* *Posting early as the book is longer than our usual reads, clocking in at 600 pages* For August we'll read a mystery, Orient by Christopher Bollen. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22693249-orient "Orient is an isolated town on the north fork of Long Island, its future as a historic village newly threatened by the arrival of wealthy transplants from Manhattan—many of them artists. One late summer morning, the body of a local caretaker is found in the open water; the same day, a monstrous animal corpse is found on the beach, presumed a casualty from a nearby research lab. With rumors flying, eyes turn to Mills Chevern—a tumbleweed orphan newly arrived in town from the west with no ties and a hazy history. As the deaths continue and fear in town escalates, Mills is enlisted by Beth, an Orient native in retreat from Manhattan, to help her uncover the truth. With the clock ticking, Mills and Beth struggle to find answers, faced with a killer they may not be able to outsmart. "

What we're about

Good people reading good (and sometimes bad) books. I was surprised by the lack of book clubs in Fort Worth, so I decided to start one. We read a wide variety books including fiction, non-fiction, thriller, memoirs, and sci-fi. Brewed on Magnolia Street has become the homebase for our group. They treat us well and provide us with a nice space for our group.

We meet at 6pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. The first meet-up of the month is dedicated to a short story discussion and the second meet-up is our book discussion. We may have a list of discussion questions for each meet-up which we may or may not use. Our conversations are very organic and are always thought provoking. This group is for open-minded people that are interested in having honest, candid, and challenging conversations.

How we pick short stories

Short stories are suggested by group members, or an organizer, and must be accessible for free online. Non-fiction is acceptable, too. The suggested length is a piece that can be read in 30 minutes or less.

How we pick books

Books are suggested by members and are put on a list. We then use this list to get consensus for our next read. We try to rotate through different topics and genres, and books are removed from the list if not chosen after three months. It's preferable a book be out for six months to a year so that used copies or soft copies are available or can readily be checked out at a library.

Membership and Attendance

Anyone can join, and we consider an active member anyone who has visited Meetup.com within a year. Members will be removed if they have been inactive longer than that, but are welcome to rejoin. In April and October, we take a collection towards Meetup.com dues ($90/six months).

Starting in 2017, we will be taking attendance in order to address no shows. Please be courteous to other members by updating your RSVP, especially if we have a full meetup.
