October GDG - Kotlin!
Details
This session will be about one of the fastest growing languages in the world, Kotlin!
It’s a concise, modern language that can run in the browser, on the JVM, on Android and as a stand-alone binary.
Some real world products that run on Kotlin include Uber, Monzo, Coursera, Pinterest, Evernote, All4, and Deliveroo.
First off we’ll go through some of the more technical aspects, and then talk about the benefits it can bring to your development process.
Following on from that, we’ll be demonstrating how Kotlin works by running through the Gilded Rose kata. An idea taken from martial arts, katas are a great way of learning a new language, by taking you through well-defined concepts, in a step-by-step fashion.
We’ll also form into groups to work through the problem together and share some knowledge.
What to bring:
This is a live coding demonstration so you won’t need to bring along your laptop, but if you want to do so you’re more than welcome. You can do this with a text editor and command line tools, but the easiest option is the free community version of IntelliJ or Android Studio, with the Kotlin plugin installed.
There will be some food and drink provided and we’ll go for some drinks afterward.
