As a certified Yoga Teacher since the year 2000, I have found it frustrating to watch helplessly as my students and myself succumbed to what is often thought of as the effects of aging. Stiff achy joints, chronic pain and inflammation were common. Though yoga seemed to help to some degree, it did not seem as effective as I thought it should be.
After a particularly active summer, where I played a lot of tennis, I, who had been doing full lotus for over 40 years found my legs got so stiff it was painful for me to sit cross legged at all. I couldn't put one knee over the other when seated in a chair. My gate was badly effected and it was painful to walk much of the time. This was more than embarrassing as a yoga teacher. It just plain sucked. I found I was able to make some progress against the stiffness with Yin style yoga poses, working at my new decidedly limited edge, with long holds and also doing self massage. Still the progress was slow and I had given up a lot of activities like tennis and hiking that I missed.
Then I found a Somatic Exercise Class being offered and as a long time student of Continuum Body Movement, which is another Somatic technique, it piqued my interest. I knew from my experience with Continuum that the Somatic approach of deeply listening to and respecting ones body is powerful. The focus in Hanna Somatic Exercise is on releasing deeply held tension, much of which we are completely unconscious of. This seemed like it might address my issues and sure enough from the first class my symptoms began improving and I have continued to improve till the present day. I'm back to hiking and playing tennis twice a week and I am comfortable in half lotus hoping to get back to full lotus before long.
Because of this history I have been training to become a certified Hanna Somatic Exercise instructor and my training is nearly complete. I am able to offer what I know to be a powerful healing practice and I hope you will join me to experience freedom from the aches and pains that may be holding you back in your life.
