Music Under Glass - Viennese Café Concert

September 25, 2016

Door opens at 10:15, Concert 11:00 - 1:30

Come join us in a unique concert experience!

Viennese Café concerts are celebrated throughout Europe, but they are infrequent here in America; perhaps the American lifestyle is too hectic, and we have not had the opportunity to appreciate the elegant yet joyous atmosphere of the Viennese café. Garfield Park Conservatory’s second season will open with a Viennese Café-style concert. On a relaxing Sunday morning, the audience will be treated to great Viennese music in the elegant Horticultural Hall. The Hall opens into the spectacular outdoor Monet garden, alive with the beautiful plants and flowers of early autumn.

Viennese café house culture is a proud custom in central Europe, open to everyone who appreciates the casual atmosphere and intellectual exchange among peers. Guests can sit for hours visiting, playing cards, enjoying music, and perusing vast numbers of newspapers and journals. Indeed, many noted musicians, artists, and members of the literary elite have been inspired to creativity by the lively exchange of ideas in the Viennese café house.

This event will be a casual and relaxing experience; though ample cafe-style seating will be provided, in keeping with the Viennese tradition, the spacious Hall and the adjacent garden will allow guests to move about easily to enjoy the indoor and outdoor gardens, conversation with friends, and traditional Viennese coffee, wine, savory appetizers, and Viennese pastries.

Viennese Café concerts feature a similar atmosphere of joy and abandon, with lifting melodies composed by some of the giants of the era; composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Fritz Kreisler, Franz Lehar, Anton Bruckner, Franz Joseph Haydn, Gustav Mahler, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss, and many others created some of their most celebrated works for this most European of venues.

Music will be performed by Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago with Conductor Mina Zikri and Violinist Ilya Kaler:

Mina Zikri, is the Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director. He is a talented violinist, teacher, and conductor who holds advanced degrees in violin performance.
