What we're about

GAY WINOS is a Gay mens WINE & FOOD TASTING & SOCIAL GROUP that was launched in April 2010 and hosts at least 3-4 wine or food related outings every month. Our group is for Gay men who would like to learn more about the local Southern California wine & food scene, network with other professionals and meet new friends. We visit local wine bars or restaurants and events throughout the greater L.A. area on weeknights or weekends and occasionally get together at members' homes.

GAY WINOS also plans occasional visits to wineries (from Temecula to Paso Robles), wine festivals or unique events that integrate wine and/or food into the mix, but run the gamut. See our "past events" section which shows the types of diverse things we do including historical tours, outdoor canyon hikes, watching female roller derby, movie nights and more. To offer more variety we will occasionally place emphasis on beer or just food offerings. And you do NOT have to drink alcohol at any of our events to participate--though you will certainly in most cases be exposed to it.

Our membership is varied and open to Gay men between 25 years old and "youthfully" older. We only request that you do NEVER consume more than the legal amount of alcohol then attempt to drive after any of our events. If you unintentionally do consume too much wine then please ask another group member for a ride home or call a taxi. We want to make sure our members are safe and sound!

If you want to suggest group outing ideas please feel free to do so. WE ONLY ASK THAT YOU PLEASE HONOR YOUR WORD AND DO NOT R.S.V.P. UNLESS YOU ARE FAIRLY SURE YOU CAN ATTEND AN EVENT.

Welcome to GAY WINOS--and as the late jazz diva Shirley Horn used to say "Here's to Life, Here's to Love...Here's to YOU!"

Portuguese Bend Distilling

In June 2019 PORTUGUESE BEND became the first official alcoholic beverage distillery in Long Beach and believe it or not, it does make its own in-house gin, vodka and rum (and recently even briefly produced hand sanitizer when it became in short supply in Long Beach). It got its unique name from nearby Portuguese Bend on the Palos Verdes Peninsula because 100 years ago--during Prohibition--when alcohol was officially banned from the United States, booze was unofficially smuggled into Southern California from places like Mexico, Canada and even New York through this nearby coastal enclave (now more famous for its constantly-eroding shoreline). This will be our first official Long Beach gathering in over a year and will include our one "unofficial" female member Linda L. Though our group since its 2010 launch has been oriented only to gay men, in our pre-covid days we did allow event hosts when using their own homes to invite close friends and family members--including women. And did allow members to bring guests when larger attendance counts prevailed. Linda was invited as a guest by longtime member Alfonso L. to a wonderful outing we had several years ago in a former wine-oriented restaurant in Signal Hill and her friendliness and charm won over all of our members. Since then, on occasion, Linda has joined our group for various outings even though she personally prefers only sweet wines (probably to match her sweet personality). In addition, Linda on her own has periodically hosted Long Beach-based members of our group as well as other gay friends to join her on vacation outings, picnics. brunches and other gatheriings (such as a memorial to our beloved member Dane M. who we still miss and remember). Portuguese Bend, in downtown Long Beach's Promenade district, features a wonderful gastropub menu and is a colaboration of local business talents including Lola’s Mexican Cuisine and Social List proprietors Luis and Brenda Navarro, as well as Jim Leatherman and Josh Johnson of the local menswear brand, Port LBC--in addition to distiller Simon Haxton who is also an engineer for Boeing Aircraft. Some of PB's most popular food items are its pot roast melt, Nashville hot fried chicken sandwich, "Fig and Bleu" salad (and ONLY on Tuesday nights) their specialty prime rib entree. For our brunch visit their menu will also include $5 bloody marys, $15 champagne bottles served with a side of orange juice (to make your own mimosas) and distinctive array of omelets, scrambles, frittatas, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches and breakfast burritos and vegan selections--most in the affordable $12-14 price range. You can view their complete and mouthwatering Brunch menu at the following weblink: https://6cfe2340-c93b-4392-a3b7-7941f4dcf4a0.filesusr.com/ugd/3cfd10_4f1b1205afab409989ff5bca53c3ad02.pdf Portuguese Bend is also just across the street from our longtime members Steven & Ramiro's loft apartment and this apparently will be their first visit to this Prohibition-inspired establishment. It is located on the Promenade North and 3rd Street--just west of Long Beach Boulevard. Street and pay parking is available nearby. We will be dining outdoors within reach of the ocean breeze. After brunch, members may continue their inbibing and socializing at other nearby wine bars or other establishments--by consensus. PARKING: Street metered parking and parking lot structure pay parking is available nearby. DISCLAIMER: MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES except when you are specifically drinking and eating. As an added safeguard, members are asked to ONLY SPEAK when they have their mask on. In other words WHEN YOU EAT OR DRINK--AVOID TALKING UNTIL YOU HAVE YOUR FACE COVERED WITH A MASK. Social distancing will practiced. Obviously, please do not attend if you have any flu-like symptoms. By attending this event you hold organizer Jono and Meetup.com harmless from any liability from Covid-19 exposure or illness. Each member attends at their own limited risk.

First 2020 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE Outdoor Viewing Party

Jono's Talavera House

The first long-awaited debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be moderated by Fox News' Chris Wallace and is scheduled to take place next Tuesday, September 29 at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. Note: The actual debate will be telecasted from 6 to 7:30pm Pacific Time (so Jono's outdoor projection TV may not be optimum--though still viewable--until after 6:30pm when the sun goes down). Wallace selected the following topics for the first debate: "The Trump and Biden Records," "The Supreme Court," "Covid-19," "The Economy," "Race and Violence in our Cities," and "The Integrity of the Election," according to the Commission on Presidential Debates. Each segment will last about 15 minutes, and the candidates will have two minutes to respond after the moderator opens each segment with a question. Wallace will then use the rest of the time in the segment to facilitate further discussion on the topic, according to the commission. Jono will provide a salad that he will serve in individual paper bowls to minimize handling. But the idea is to preorder individual pizzas from nearby Palermo's Restaurant that he will have delivered. Individual pizzas with two items will cost about $13 plus tax, delivery and tip. Or you can bring your own meal items and your preferred wine. But do let Jono know ahead of time if you want to order a pizza and bring cash to make it easier to pay for. He will also provide paper plates, plastic cups, utensils and ice. You can see Palermo's pizza menu at the following weblink: https://www.palermorestaurant.net/menu TO RSVP for this limited seating viewing party, please RSVP online then ALSO SEPARATELY EMAIL JONO at [masked] WITH YOUR CELL PHONE NUMBER where he can confirm your attendance to this event (and also reach you if ever necessary in case of emergency). Or if you are a regular member and sure he already has your cell number then just text him directly. PARKING: Free street parking is available near Jono's home (during the pandemic the church next door has stopped hosting nightly 12-step meetings so parking is not as scarce as pre-Covid). DISCLAIMER: MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES except when you are drinking and eating. Social distancing will practiced. Obviously, please do not attend if you have any flu-like symptoms. By attending this event you hold organizer Jono and Meetup.com harmless from any liability from Covid-19 exposure or illness. Each member attends at their own limited risk.
