An oasis of calm in the heart of London for gay, bi and trans men. “This group is unique and is valuable for men who just drop in occasionally or attend regularly. It provides a reasonable ‘compromise’ for those who are new to meditation as well as those who are more experienced meditators. The group is led in a wise and thoughtful way bearing in mind it is for a diverse mix of guys.” - meet with a group of friendly men - start the week in a calming your mind - learn skills to help you let go of stress and worry - learn tools to deal with addictions and compulsive behaviour - improve you sense of self worth and confidence - make new friends The group is now in its 9th year and attracts a diverse range of men. The evening starts with some mindful movement, to bring awareness into the body, and then a guided body awareness meditation and mindfulness practice. There is a 25 minute tea break mid evening offering the opportunity to socialise, or there is the option to listen to a talk or music in a smaller group if you want to stay in a quieter space. After the tea break there is a short reflection on a topic relating to mindfulness or gay men’s wellbeing. We then finish with a guided meditation on self-care, the Loving Kindness meditation. No prior experience of meditation is needed as full instructions are given and you are guided into the meditation. We sit on chairs, but there are mats and cushions available if you are used to sitting on the floor, or would like to lie down. “Last thing at night, I sit on the edge of the bed and meditate for five to ten minutes. I then have the best sleep I have had for weeks. This happened after only two weeks of classes with Nick. I normally sleep very well but am now on a recently released drug for COPD. Side effects might include disturbed sleep patterns but the meditation has helped alleviate this!” Ken Meetings every Monday except Bank Holidays Venue: Friends Meeting House 8 Hop Gardens (a pedestrian lane off St Martins Lane) London WC2N 4EA Nearest tube: Leicester Square or Charring Cross To find the venue walk along Saint Martins Lane and look for Hop Gardens which is a pedestrian lane between Cote and Gym Box Time: 7.30 – 9.15 pm Cost: Try the group out for a reduced rate of £10 for your first visit or pay £5 concession rate for students and unemployed. Visitors are asked to come to the Meeting Point in the Grand Entrance (enter from Cromwell Road). Please allow for enough time to arrive before 16.00hrs, as this is the time we promptly depart for the tour. Although socialising is encouraged, this aspect is not facilitated by the event organiser or the guides. The multi-award winning LGBTQ Tours at the V&A run for approximately 60 minutes and are free; you simply turn up. There will be a lot of walking, including steps and stairs. Please let your guide know if you may have difficulty, as alternative arrangements can be made. The V&A is the world's leading museum of art and design, housing a collection of over 2.3 million objects that span over 5,000 years of human creativity. For the first time, a major museum in the UK has added a volunteer-led and guided LGBTQ objects tour to its permanent schedule. LGBTQ stories of interest can be found in numerous objects within the V&A's rich collections. The tour aims to highlight how such objects can help to recognise and explore the presence of LGBTQ individuals and communities within different time periods and cultures, encouraging discussion of both gender and sexual identities. Volunteer guides will show you a mix of items in the collection. A tour may include the impressive Michelangelo’s David, a charming earthenware vase by Grayson Perry, an exquisite gold pendant with pearl border depicting Sappho Penning an Ode to Venus and a South Asian Kushan sculpture of Shiva as Ardhanishvara (Lord Who Is Half Woman) with intertwined male and female physical attributes. Each tour is different as each guide chooses their own objects, so you can come back many times and have a different experience. To see a virtual tour online, see this link on The i Paper Facebook page: bit.ly/2lUclsn The monumental Florentine sculpture Giambologna’s Samson Slaying a Philistine, hailed as one of the greatest treasures of the V&A, is included because Charles, Prince of Wales, presented it to his boyfriend, the Duke of Buckingham, immediately after being given it by King Philip IV of Spain. Objects range geographically from Europe, South Asia and North America and in time from classical Greece and Rome to Medieval and Renaissance and through to the 21st Century, and include sculpture, paintings, photography, jewellery, ceramics, furniture, fashion, costumes, to posters to! Queer stories have always existed in the museum, but have often been historically hidden from visitors; this tour allows them to be shared. Dawn Hoskin, co-chair of the V&A’s LBGTQ Working Group says, "it conveys recognition of LGBTQ communities and individuals as being a valued part of wider societies, and contributing elements of wider social histories, rather than being considered only as a distinct ‘specialist interest’." The tours have attracted thousands of visitors since they started in 2015, and are a statement to all LGBTQ visitors to the Museum that they are accepted, respected and welcome.
