Tell us three areas of science in which you are interested.

Actually, I'm more of an engineer. Background in graphics and cryptography, grew up into energy policy, and now do a lot of infrastructure theory. I tend to be very much on the edge of things, in terms of researching and developing new ways of doing this - almost an inventor, really. I'm quite interested in evolution, too, in how this enormously powerful tool which is the fundamental answer to "how did things get this way?" works.

Tell us a funny or interesting anecdote about you.

Ah, gods... all the really good ones are classified... er... I used to a regular fixture at Burning Man, and now my stuff is all over the playa, slowly turning into the standard shelter they use out there; I'm waiting for the backlash! Not much of a story, really.

What kind of events would you like to attend?

Weirdly, stuff with a bit of space, time and not too much background noise. London's really short of venues where you can meet people and talk with them in an environment that lets you actually hear what they're saying.

I'm Vinay Gupta, best known for work on refugee issues and state failure, focussed very much on pragmatic applications of simple technologies. I'm also becoming increasingly aware of the cultural issues which frame the art of the possible.
