After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. E.T. soon falls ill, however, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.
Steven Spielberg’s classic timeless story of a lost and magical visitor from a long way away, trying to return home, continues to captivate viewers of all ages. The audience doesn’t need to speak E.T.’s language to empathize with his fear and loneliness, to wonder at his powers, and to want to help him in his struggle to get back to where he belongs. Sometimes the aliens aren’t the real monsters.
