What we're about

Oak Park needs more geek fun. I'm new to the area and looking to have a good time with fellow nerds. Want to do some gaming? Binge watch Doctor Who? Go see the latest sci-fi movie? Watch the Walking Dead together every week? Go see a nerdy burlesque show? Laser tag? Haunted houses? Hay rides? Picking apples? Whatever activity you guys want to do we can do.

13th Age: The Adventures Continue! (Now shorter and more frequently.)

I’ve been wanting to run a roleplaying campaign this summer and have decided on 13th Age, a D&D offshoot by the developers of 4th Edition. This is the next gameplay session in this new campaign. It’ll be at my studio apartment; if we have problems with space we can discuss them along with scheduling. Contact Jeff if you need the pdfs and he’ll share them with you.

Discuss SF & Fantasy-Related Media and a SF/Fantasy Novel

Forest Park Public Library

WHAT, WHERE, AND WHEN There’s a book group in Forest Park (FP) that you can attend for interesting discussions of science fiction, fantasy, and similar works, as well as movies, TV shows, and news about science fiction and fantasy. It’s the Speculative Fiction Book Group, which meets the second Thursday of the month at 7 PM in the Forest Park Library (at Jackson and Des Plaines). You can join the Group’s discussions whether you’re from Forest Park or not. SCHEDULE OF MEETING DATES AND BOOKS TO BE DISCUSSED FROM APRIL THRU AUGUST 2019 Apr 11 The stars are legion by Kameron Hurley May 9 Head On by John Scalzi Jun 13 After the End of the World by Jonathan L Howard Jul 11 Small Gods by Terry Pratchett Aug[masked] : The Final Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke MORE INFO ON THE SPECULATIVE FICTION BOOK GROUP The Group does not have a librarian running its meetings. Instead, Group members conduct the meetings, and members choose titles for discussion. Also, you don’t have to live in Forest Park to participate in the Group. While you can buy the Group’s books before a meeting, they are also available at the FP Library. (You should call the Library (at[masked]) before coming in to pick up a book in order to make sure the books have arrived.) Or you can order the books yourself on library computer systems, such as SWAN. Two-hour on-street parking is available near the FP Library (which is at Jackson and Des Plaines), and Group meetings last less than two hours. So, come to the next meetup in Forest Park and join the friendly and lively discussion.(Note that you are welcome at a meeting even if you don't finish reading the book that is discussed at that meeting.) If you want more information about the Speculative Fiction Book Group you can send a message to Walt L at this Meetup group.

BYOBoard Games at The Beer Shop

Location visible to members

*************************** Let's get together on a nice Sunday afternoon with some great brews at my favorite neighborhood spot, The Beer Shop. The staff is super-nice, the beer menu is ever-changing and the place is dog-friendly! For teetotalers, coffee, sodas, and juices are also available. Beer Shop is BYOFood and often have chips and snacks for purchase. They have a small selection of board games, so I highly suggest we bring our own. Other stuff: • DRIVERS: The lot can fill quickly, so be patient and flexible when finding parking. Free street parking is located on the other side of the train tracks on Pleasant St and Home Ave (no restrictions on Sundays). Hourly garage is at the Target on Lake St (3 min walk) • If you plan on drinking, public transportation (Green Line, Metra, or Harlem Pace/CTA) is plentiful and available • Though this event is technically free, please thank our host business with your patronage as you are able Looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces!
