See all- Book selection: Into the TreesThe International House of Associations, Genève
Throughout history, our species had a complex relationship with forests, relying on them for shelter, sustenance, plunder and spiritual meaning. We will look at how this interaction is reflected in literature, where forests often appear as places of mystery, danger, and transformation. Writers we will discuss have used forests to explore human emotion, morality and the uncertain boundary between civilization and wilderness.

In "The Ambassadors," Lambert Strether is sent by his fiancée, Mrs. Newsome, to Paris to convince her son, Chad, to return home and take over his family business. As Strether explores European society, he grapples with cultural differences, moral dilemmas, and his own growing sense of self. He becomes increasingly charmed by Paris and its inhabitants, particularly Madame de Vionnet and Chad, leading him to question his initial mission and his own values. Say Yes to the Big Book!
With the summer break approaching and more time to read (!) on our hands and to keep in line with our little traditions, the club will host an informal book selection meeting. Everyone is invited to propose a big book (previously put forward at the club, or not) they think is worth our summer reading time. We will then chose the winner as per our usual method.
