THE FIFE COASTAL PATH (FCP) is one of Scotland's Great Trails and stretches for 117 miles from the Firth of Forth in the south, to the Firth of Tay in the north. The route offers an unrivalled walking experience from easy and level, to wild and demanding.

THE PLAN: We’re aiming to complete the 117 miles in small sections (mostly 5 - 10 miles) and there will definitely be something for everyone en route. i.e. The cosmopolitan atmosphere of St.Andrews, former coal mining towns of central Fife, small fishing villages of the East Neuk, bustling industrial areas of the west, rugged cliffs, award winning beaches, internationally important estuaries and wild natural landscapes... home to a wide variety of wildlife. Sometimes we’ll have peace and tranquillity and at other times we’ll have action and adventure.
Should we be lucky enough to complete the entire 117 miles we'll be entitled to order a certificate to prove we’ve done so (cost £5.00)

3a) BURNTISLAND TO KIRKCALDY = 6.5 Miles
This section of The Fife Coastal Path will take us from 'Burntisland to Buckhaven' via historic towns, botanically important coastal grasslands and much of geological interest.

  • Lava flows are a feature of this part of the coast, a reminder of an eruption of The Binn volcano over 300 million years ago. The underlying limestone strata contain marine fossils from a time when Scotland had a tropical climate.
  • The path from Burntisland to Kinghorn, passes the momument to Alexander III who fell to his death nearby in the 13th century.
  • On the outskirts of Kirkcaldy the path passes the 16th century Seafield Tower.
  • This area is rich in bird life and seals can often be seen basking on the rocks.

TRAVEL: The best option is to take the train as it cuts the journey each way by more than an hour. Cheapest option is to buy an 'Off Peak Day Return to Kirkcaldy'. Get off the train at Burntisland on the outward journey and return from Kirkcaldy rail station on the return journey. This ticket will cost £9.80 (Less if you have a railcard)

TRAIN: Leaves Edinburgh Waverley at 11:10 - Arrives Burntisland at 11:45
RETURN: Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh: Trains run regularly 16:39, 16:46, 16:59, 17:36, 17:47, 18:20 etc regular trains (arrives Edinburgh approx 40 min later) https://www.thetrainline.com
