Recreational Kayak Class (No Skirt Reqd)

Whether you are a beginning kayaker or someone who’s been paddling for years and never had any formal training - NOW is the time to improve your skills and become a better paddler! The Georgia Canoe Association (GCA) is offering 3 Recreational Paddling Classes in June 2013. All classes are taught by ACA certified instructors. These classes will cover basic safety, strokes, and other essentials of recreational paddling. Suitable boats include recreational or touring kayaks, sit on top kayaks and canoes.

They will take place on various beginner rivers and lakes in the GA, NC, TN Tri-State area. The participation fee is $35.00 for members and $70.00 for non-members (includes a GCA membership).

Register online at or contact the instructor directly. Participation requires that you bring your own boat, pfd (life preserver), paddle, helmet, etc. In some cases there may be an outfitter nearby where you can rent a boat. Additionally boats can be rented from The Outside World. For further information contact the instructor on the dates you are interested.

There are are actually more than one sessions of this class available. They all have a lake session in the morning followed by a river section after lunch. The river would not be the Chattahoochee. Some of the possible rivers are Chestatee, Etowah, or a mild section of the Cartecay depending on water level. All of the rivers in North Ga have rocks. most of the morning is learning about safety, river features, gear and strokes. Skipping the river portion of the class is an option that would avoid scratches, but the river part of the class is the most fun.
