Disclaimer #1 - Please note the early start time. We are going to be leaving promptly at 7:45 AM to go down to the Punch Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway to set up a car shuttle. Please make sure to arrive at the carpool location by 7:35 AM so that the hike leader can coordinate the setup of the car shuttle.
Disclaimer #2 - Since this hike is rated as a strenuous hike, all hikers will start the hike on the wait list until I can verify the hiking experience of all hikers on the wait list. All hikers, who have not hiked with me before, will need to answer the following questions.
1. How often do you hike?
2. What strenuous hikes have you done?
3. When and what was the last strenuous hike that you completed?
If I do not receive the answers to the above questions within one week of the RSVP, that hiker will be moved to NOT GOING. The answers to the above questions need to be emailed to me at [masked] or via Meetup messages.
Hike Highlights - Appalachian Trail, Punch Bowl Mountain, Punch Bowl Shelter, Wildflowers emergence, views from Bluff Mountain, Cline Memorial on Bluff Mountain, views from Big and Little Rocky Row, James River Foot Bridge
Hike Details - This is a hike that was attempted in the winter, but had to be changed due to the Blue Ridge Parkway being closed. We are going to try this hike again in the Spring. We are going to leave the carpool location at the Fontaine Research Park at 7:45 AM. Please make sure to be on time. We are going to drive down to the Punch Bowl Mountain overlook at mile marker 51.7 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and set up a point to point shuttle hike. We are going to hike 11 miles on the Appalachian Trail over Punch Bowl Mountain and Bluff Mountain. On the summit of Bluff Mountain, we will have amazing views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. On the summit of Bluff Mountain are the remains of an old fire tower and the memorial to Ottie Cline Powell, a young child, who died on Bluff Mountain. I have provided a link with the story of Ottie Cline Powell. We will continue on the Appalachian Trail to Little Rocky Row and Big Rocky Row. We will continue on the Appalachian Trail down to the James River Foot Bridge and complete the hike.
As is tradition with my hikes, there will be an optional post hike at a local restaurant/brewery. Carpools can be arranged accordingly, for those who wish to partake in the post hike.
What to Bring - broken in hiking boots, trekking poles, 3 to 4 liters of water, camera/phone, layers of clothing, permethrin for those ticks, sunscreen, first aid kit, beanies and gloves (still need to be prepared for possible cold weather)
