Disclaimer #1 - This hike is the second in a series of exploratory hikes for the month of August. Even though this hike is rated as a moderately strenuous hike, all hikers are going to start on the wait list due to this hike being a new hike for the hike leader. All hikers, who have not hiked with me before, will need to answer the following questions. I do need to ensure that all hikers are comfortable with hiking in the back country.
- How often do you hike?
- What moderately strenuous hikes have you done?
- When and what was the last moderately strenuous hike that you completed?
The answers to these questions need to be either email to me at patrickcory@hotmail.com or via Meetup messages within one week of the RSVP. Failure to answer the questions will move the hiker from the wait list to NOT GOING.
Hike Details - This is the second in a series of new and exploratory hikes for the month of August. For this hike, we are going to be doing a recommended hike from another hike leader in another group. We are going down to Arcadia area along I 81. We are going to form carpools at the Fontaine Research Park shortly before 8:15 AM. We are going to drive down to the Arcadia exit, and make our way to the trailhead on VA 614. We are going to start the hike by crossing on the pedestrian bridge to the Little Cove Mountain Trail. About 0.3 miles into the hike, we are going to head down to a secluded waterfall. We are going to hike the Little Cove Mountain Trail uphill to the ridge. We are going to take the uphill options up to the intersection with the Glenwood Horse Trail. Upon reaching the Glenwood Horse Trail, we are going to turn right and following the Glenwood Horse Trail to the intersection with the Appalachian Trail. We are going to turn left onto the Appalachian Trail. We are going to hike the Appalachian Trail past the Buchanan Trail to the intersection with the Little Cove Mountain Trail. Along this stretch of Appalachian Trail, we will have multiple view points and rock outcroppings. Upon reaching the Little Cove Mountain Trail, we are going to turn left and descend back down to the cars on Rt. 614. We will close the loop shortly before the pedestrian bridge at the beginning of the hike. We will recross the pedestrian bridge and finish the hike.
