Appalachian Trail - Rockfish Gap to Paul Wolfe Shelter - Retrace Hike
This is a moderately strenuous 9 mile round trip hike along the Appalachian Trail (AT) with an elevation change of approximately 1,000 feet. This section of the AT is primarily along a ridgeline. And with the trees stripped of their leaves, we should be treated to several nice views of the Rockfish Valley.
As for the elevation change, the majority of it will be at the mid-point of our hike as we descend to the Paul Wolfe Shelter - and then retrace our steps back up to the ridgeline. The Paul Wolfe Appalachian Trail Shelter is adjacent to a beautiful mountain stream and is located in a relatively level area that will provide us with a tranquil place to break for lunch.
We will be traveling from Charlottesville to the trail head at the summit of Afton Mountain. It is approximately a 30 minute drive from Charlottesville to the top of Afton Mountain.
Please post a comment if you would prefer to meet at the trailhead parking lot.
And for those that are interested, we will plan to stop at Pro Re Nata Brewery at the conclusion of our hike for refreshments and an opportunity to purchase food/snacks.
Supplies: please bring plenty of water and wear hiking boots/shoes. Trekking poles are recommended for this hike.
We will be hiking for several hours, including breaking for lunch at the Paul Wolfe Shelter or another scenic, wooded area.
Weather: If inclement weather necessitates canceling or postponing the hike, the decision will be made no later than 9:00 a.m. the morning of the hike. If necessary, a cancellation notice will be posted on the hike comment section.
Our hike, ~ 9 miles in distance, will begin and end at the parking lot on Afton Mountain adjacent to the popcorn stand and the orange roofed building.
RSVP: If you find that you are not going to be able to attend the hike, please update your RSVP to "No" as soon as possible. This allows those on the Waitlist to have the opportunity to attend.
Fees & Such: Of course for the carpool to work, some have to offer to drive so others can ride. Riders, please give your driver $3.00 to cover their expenses.
