GetHiking! at the new Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area

Details
Here's a unique opportunity to hike the new Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area in Alamance County. The area opened on May 22, but due to social distancing requirements is only open right now by reservation. We've reserved a 3-hour slot on Wednesday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to explore roughly 3.5 miles of trail in the preserve.
What's the trail like? We haven't hiked it yet, but what we do know is this: Cane Creek Mountain is 987 feet above sea level (making it the highest point between the coast and Greensboro), so expect some elevation change. (And be glad we didn't hike it a few hundred million years ago, when geologists say these mountains may have topped out closer to 20,000 feet.) Technically, it's part of a mountain range that includes the Uwharries to the southwest and Occoneechee Mountain to the east.
So, as far as difficulty goes, we would have to put this hike, sight-unseen, in the Moderate category.
Social distancing must be observed on this hike. That means:
- Maintain a 6-foot distance between you and your fellow hikers at all times.
- At the trailhead before the hike, you must wear a mask or face covering; once we begin hiking you may remove it.
See? No big deal.
We are limited to a total of 10 people on this hike. Minus the hike leader, that leaves 9 openings. If you sign up, then realize you can't make it, please remove your RSVP.
We're looking forward to being on the trail with you again!
