You talked and we listened. Some of you aren't fans of camping, some of you just like to make a day — a long day — of a hike. So we offer this weekend of hikes at Stone Mountain State Park. If you just want to day hike, come up for the day — it's about a 3-hour drive from the Triangle. If you want to hike both days and camp, we've got you covered as well.
Saturday, we will take a short drive to the Long Bottom access to Doughton Park and hike the 10 miles round trip, through the primitive campground and on up Basin Creek to the Caudill Cabin. If you're looking for a hike with history, water, and more water, then you'll like this hike. In 1916 a flood roared through the valley wiping out the community except for the Caudill Cabin which stands at the end of the trail. Along the way you'll pass two waterfalls, see historic remnants of the Basin Cove community, and execute 16 stream crossings. Usually the highlight of a hike is a waterfall or summit viewpoint, but the end of this trail at the restored Caudill Cabin in a clearing in the middle of nowhere is remarkable.
Sunday's hike will start at the campground for a round trip loop of Stone Mountain of almost 5 miles. Some side trails can increase the distance. After the hike, plan to stop for an ice cream cone at the country store just outside the park.

Driving time: 3 hours
Saturday hike: 10 miles moderate to difficult
Sunday hike: 4.75 miles moderate
Camping in group sites with bathrooms and showers. Room for 35 campers.
Fee for this hike is $25 for non campers, $45 for campers. The hiking only fee covers both days, if elect to stay overnight in nearby lodging (the town of Elkin, presumably).
Base fee includes a swag bag and eguide with maps and details on the hike, appropriate clothing and gear, etc.
