Welcome to the third of our Advanced Backpacking Skills weekend trips scheduled for 2017. All trips are Friday afternoon through mid-afternoon Sunday, and focus on different skills. Each class is limited to 12 participants. These are not boot-camp type classes: we’ll practice specific backcountry skills, but the overriding goal is what it always is on a backpack trip: have fun!
The classes are:
• Wilson Creek: July 28-30. Skills: water crossings, setting up camp at night. (See below for a more detailed account.)
• Linville Gorge: August 25-27. Skills: water crossings, navigating a wilderness area. (See GetBackpacking! Advanced Skills: Linville Gorge entry.)
Pisgah National Forest, Wilson Creek: October 6-8. Skills: solo backpacking (See GetBackpacking! Advanced Skills: Going Solo entry)
Going Solo
We’re still working on the exact location. Here’s how this weekend will work. We’ll leave the Triangle around noon on Friday, arrive at our destination around 4 p.m., set up camp by 6. Saturday morning, we’ll send off hikers individually, at 15-minute intervals. Each hiker will be given a destination for the evening, where she/he will camp alone. You will hike most of the day alone (unless you run into other hikers and backpackers along the way), you will camp alone. We will keep you relatively close to one another — within a quarter mile or so. There will be two instructors on the trip, each assigned to specific backpackers. They will look in on you, but make contact only if requested. Sunday morning, the hike leaders will collect each hiker starting around 9 a.m. for the hike out. We will finish together.
