Details

Why would you want to go to Antarctica? It’s so cold there. That’s a common response when Alison Watta tells people she "vacationed" on the Frozen Continent. (And actually, she corrects them, it’s not that cold: during the summer, November through March, the temperature averages 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.)

That myth dispelled, why else should one visit? It's one of the planet's last unspoiled venues, and animals you’ve only seen in a zoo or aquarium are inches from you. Penguins wander right up to you and stare curiously. Elephant seals lounging on the warm sand of a volcano eye you cautiously. Even whales that explore your little Zodiac commuter boat swim just inches away. Come here Alison discuss these and other reasons to visit in this third installment of our monthly Explorer Series, sponsored by Great Outdoor Provision Co. • What to bring
Bring your curiosity — and a pen and notepad to start planning your visit.
