The holidays are over, yet spring camping seems so far away. What's an outdoor gal to do? Sign up for our winter camping weekend — "camping," that is, in a well-equipped cabin complete with beds, full kitchen supplies and best of all, heat! We'll host this weekend at Hanging Rock State Park, with a variety of trails to explore right outside our doors.

Enjoy a weekend of hiking, evening chats with friends new and old, most meals provided and all just a short 2.5-hour drive from the Triangle. After a full day of hiking, there's not exhausting drive home — simply retire to your cabin for a good night's rest.

Here's the plan

Friday evening

Arrive after 5. Get settled into your cabin, then head to our base cabin to go over our weekend hiking plan.

Saturday

We'll get you started with a breakfast of hot coffee, bagel, yogurt, fruit, oatmeal.

We'll start the day hiking the Moore's Wall Loop, passing Balanced Rock, taking a break on Moore's Knob to enjoy the view, then returning to our cabins. About a 5-mile hike, with some good climbs; we rate it Strenuous. We'll have lunch along the way. Option for those looking for more miles: tack on the Magnolia Springs Trail to Cook's Wall, with the Chestnut Oak Nature Trail. About 4 additional miles.

In the afternoon, we'll hike a shorter trail or two within the park.

Dinner: turkey chili, salad, cornbread. Campfire with s'mores to end our perfect day.

Sunday

After breakfast (see Saturday's menu), we will hike the Hanging Rock Trail, and the trails to Window and Hidden Falls, and to Upper Cascade Falls. Total distance: 4 miles.
