Skateboard hybrids are becoming a multi-generational favorite alternative ride.

Sure, the standard short deck is just as green of a ride, but the reality is that longboards make skateboarding accessible to everyday people who just want to cruise and don’t want to work so hard for it, or get so hurt for it. But don’t kid yourself, I’ve tanked on a longboard bombing hills in San Francisco, there’s nothing pretty about falling. Like Billy Rohan demonstrates in Epically Later’d, skating across 14th Street can be a very sketchy ride….

Longboards, cruisers, and old school decks have plenty to offer with a lot of room in between to get what your reaaaallly looking for. Not everbody’s down for doing it the hard way, but skaters fear not:

Don’t hate; relate. - Woodpushers should not be hate’n on anything that supports creativty and most basically enjoyment.

We’ve still got the tricks after all, which are the highest source of creative outlet that skateboarding has to offer. During these times of uncertainity, there’s no sense in animosity. It will always help to have more of the the $$ coming in also. Fan bases will only get bigger and longboarders have to buy a lot of shoes.

Folks: Remember to BUY LOCALLY!!!
(when you can.)

It’s your local companies that support your local skateboarding community, where as CCS supports… Foot Locker. <-whom I like too, but when you personally see guys like Steve Rodriguez from 5 Boro handing out boards to kids who need them and building them a free skatepark, sorry Footlocker..

What longboards can do is get everyday people off of their butts and doing something physical that can also give you that mental peace of mind that comes from feeling a connection to the earth, even if it is made of concrete.
Jenica, pictured to the right, is from Bushwood, Brooklyn and has been riding about 3 years. She’s one of many ladies that showed up to the event.

The Green Effect
Longboarding is going getting big and going green. As more and more New Yorkers find themselves fascinated by the leisurely, laid back life of the street surfer and they begin to picture themselves doing it and they spend less time riding around in taxi’s smogging up the city.

When we made it out to the Green Skate event hosted by local board builders Bustin, we were shocked how many people came out.

The New York Green Skate event brings together a variety of riders, a few skateboarders, but mostly longboarders to raise awareness of environmental issues and to promote a lifestyle of conservation. You can check out our slide show or some of Brooklyn Barborosa’s

Held in Central Park, this event bring skaters from around the world for a 6.5 mile lap around New York, promoting low-energy transportation and interaction with the outdoors. There were all kinds of boards and more importantly a diverse and dynamic group of people who all came out to show their support of trying something new, something that doesn’t hurt anybody or anything, including the environment.

“A leisurely push, carving between bikers and waiting sun bathers, the Park was as alive as i have ever witnessed. Thousands of people there and lots of questions answered about what we were doing. Many people loved that we were pushing for a good time but many more loved that Green Skate was geared toward something more, a reminder that we can make a difference every day we step on a Bustin, Original, Loaded, or even a Sector 9(jokes, I have love for all my industry).” – Matt, Bustin Boards

Boards are Better then Bikes and Blades!
Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah!
Nah, I don’t mean it… Bicycles are great when you have a garage or rack to store them, but you can’t exactly dip into a shop or café without having to take the wheel off and chain it up. Even then you run the risk. Rollerblades are.. well.. another option for many people, but you can’t exactly jog up the subway stairs two at a time, throw them down and be on your way, now can ya?

Longboards are gaining in popularity because almost anybody can do it and it doesn’t take a thing away from skateboarding.
There will always be a core skateboarding community because longboards just don’t flip, shuv, and stall the same. They aren’t supposed to. What longboards can do is get everyday people off of their butts and doing something physical that can also give you that mental peace of mind that comes from feeling a connection to the earth, even if it is made of concrete.

Plus, you can tell the MTA to shove off you’ll push your own self around for awhile.
