JavaScript for Beginners

Details

Javascript is a language that all good web developers must know as it is the primary way to do client side web development. It can be thought of as an extension to HTML which allows developers to incorporate more functionality in their web pages (such as an expandable menu).

Many programming courses end up glossing over some of the tricky words -- 'variable', 'object', 'method' -- this course is especially designed for beginners new to programming concepts, so you'll learn to program with JavaScript. If those words are confusing to you now, no worries! You're exactly who we want to teach.

In this class, we will be covering basic development elements, Javascript, dynamic HTML, and we will touch on the jQuery library. Students will exit this class with a good grasp of basic programming principles and the knowledge of how to manipulate HTML elements.

Class Preparation and Prerequisites

Familiarity with HTML and CSS is assumed for this class - you don't need to be an expert, but an understanding of tags, attributes and how to they interact with CSS are needed to fully participate. If you do not have an understanding of how to write and build a web page using HTML and CSS, please consider taking our Intro to HTML & CSS offering first. This course is specifically for beginners and we highly advise experienced JS developers to not take this class.

Tech Requirements:

• Your laptop - Note: a netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute!

• A modern browser with either Chrome (https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/) and the "Web Developer (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bfbameneiokkgbdmiekhjnmfkcnldhhm)" extension or Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) and Firebug (http://getfirebug.com/) installed.

• A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 2 (http://www.sublimetext.com/2) (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

For Laura Vecchio (http://www.linkedin.com/in/lauravecchio/), programming was love at first sight. After writing her first lines of code while pursuing a Marketing degree from Bentley University, she knew she was destined to be a geek. After Bentley, her desire to live at the intersection of marketing and technology fueled her decision to pair her business background with a Web Development Certificate from Boston University's CDIA. She has since worn many hats in the tech industry including social media marketer, digital strategist and is now a web engineer at Bose Corporation. When she is not coding, Laura is working hard to keep her inner foodie in check with her inner yogi. She is both a Chapter Leader and Teacher with Girl Develop It Boston.
