Intro to JavaScript (4-Evening Workshop)

Details
This GDI core class provides 8 hours of woman-friendly instruction and hands-on practice in programming for beginners. It will run on 4 weeknights from 7-9 pm, September 22, 23, 28 and 29. As an incentive, we are discounting the cost of this class to $80.
JavaScript is the world's most popular programming language for a reason -- it's the primary way to build interaction on the web. Learning JavaScript is a logical next step once you've learned HTML/CSS.
Many programming courses end up glossing over some of the tricky words -- 'variable', 'object', 'method' -- that are confusing to first time programmers. This course is especially designed for beginners new to programming concepts, but familiar with HTML and CSS.
In this class, we will cover: basic programming concepts, writing JavaScript functions, browser events, and web animation. We will touch on the jQuery library. Students will gain a good grasp of basic programming principles and the knowledge of how to manipulate HTML elements.

Michelle Suranofsky is a Sr. Developer at Lehigh University where she implements open source software and develops custom web applications for the library. Michelle has 20 years of programming experience and has taught PHP & JavaScript as an adjunct instructor at Northampton Community College. She has a BS in Computer Science from Muhlenberg College and an MS in Instructional Technology from Lehigh. She loves programming and is excited to work with GDILV!
Prerequisites: We recommend at minimum having a working knowledge of HTML as a prerequisite for this course. You can take a sneak peak of the curriculum on the GDI website (https://www.girldevelopit.com/materials/intro-js).
• Please take the HTML/CSS quiz (http://elitepeers.com/gdi/html5css3/quiz.html) before attending class. If you score at least 80% on the quiz you should be fine.
• Don't forget that you can always research the concepts you miss on the quiz, and take it again until you pass. Researching and teaching yourself is essential to becoming a good programmer!
Tech Requirements:
• Your laptop. (Note: a netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute!)
• A modern browser such as Chrome or Firefox installed.
• A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text (http://www.sublimetext.com/2) or Brackets (http://brackets.io/) (They're free and available for Mac/PC/Linux).
All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It Code of Conduct (http://www.girldevelopit.com/codeofconduct).
