WordPress 101

This WordPress course runs on Saturday, February 8th from 10am to 5pm with a one-hour lunch break at 1pm.

The first hour of the first class will be a "Happiness Bar" dedicated to installing WordPress on students' hosting accounts. If you already have WordPress installed on a hosting account, or locally on your computer, feel free to arrive at 10:45.

This class is for beginners wanting to learn about using WordPress as a framework and content management system for a blog or website. You can arrive knowing nothing about WordPress and will leave knowing how to start up, build and manage a site.

We will cover the following:

• Intro to Wordpress, Installation, SecurityAdministration & Management: You'll learn how to install WordPress, gain an understanding of the admin interface and learn of how to manage site content.

• Widgets, Plugins, Themes & Customizing Themes: You'll learn how to install plugins and themes to add functionality and change the look of your site. You will also learn how to customize themes and theme frameworks.

All students MUST come to class with at least a WordPress compatible hosting account, preferably with WordPress already installed. If you do not already have WordPress up and running on your hosting account we will install it for you. Bluehost is a WordPress-recommended host and costs $4.95/month. WPEngine is another reputable host and offers GDI students 1 month of free hosting, after that hosting costs $29/month.

A basic understanding of HTML/CSS, and FTP is helpful, but it is NOT necessary. A follow-up WordPress theming class is currently being scheduled for late March.

Are there any plans to offer this course again (possibly in the suburbs)? Thanks!

    February 7, 2014

    • Tracy

Hello. Yes, this class will be offered again. I, personally, do not have plans to go to the suburbs. I imagine if there is enough interest, GDI organizers my try to put together a suburban class.

I created a 4 page WordPress site for a friend last year so I have some basic knowledge, although no formal training. I want to refresh and keep up my skills so I can continue to offer my time creating websites for multiple people. Would this be the class for me?

    January 28, 2014

    • Tracy

Hi Claudine. Yes, I think this class would be appropriate for you, especially if you want to use WordPress to create sites for clients. I will be covering security issues/best practices which is crucial to know when building sites for other people. Thanks!

I am very interested in learning wordpress but was hoping to learn in the next week or so. Do you teach privately? Do you have any students that might be interested in teaching a start up business woman whose business is Healing Hearts...Creating more love in the world.

    • Tracy

I do not do private lessons, but I would suggest joining the Philadelphia WordPress Meetup group and posting your request there. I am sure there are folks there that will help you. Thanks!

    January 20, 2014

    • Yasmine M.

Hi Anne, there's street parking all along 40th street, Locust and nearby blocks.

Really interested in this but have an alumni event already booked for that day. Bummer. Any plans to offer it again (maybe or maybe not in the suburbs?)
