Intro to jQuery

Details

This class will run Tuesday, November 10th and Thursday, November 12th from 6:30pm-8:45pm.

Have you learned about HTML and CSS and are ready to start building more interactivity into your websites? In this workshop split over two evenings, we will introduce jQuery, a popular JavaScript library for making webpages interactive and animated! jQuery is a small but powerful library that is used by companies like Google, Amazon and WordPress and on over 65% of the top 10,000 web sites. It is a must-have for any web developer's toolbox.

What we'll cover:

• Why use jQuery?
• Downloading & including the jQuery library
• The jQuery function and its shorthand, $
• Selecting/Modifying HTML elements
• Hiding, showing, and animating elements
• Plugins - what they are and how they help
• jQuery UI widgets

Prerequisites:

Please take this very brief quiz (http://elitepeers.com/gdi/jquery-intro/quiz.html). At the end of the quiz, you will get a completion code that will be requested during class registration.

Having a familiarity with the barest scripting basics (functions, variables, data types) will be helpful. We will cover how these are used in jQuery, but we won't include an in-depth introduction to programming. You should also have a solid working knowledge of HTML and CSS, especially CSS selectors.

You will need:

• Your laptop with a text editor and a modern browser installed

About the teacher:

A former English teacher in NYC, Alexandra transitioned to a career in programming out of an interest in creating and building projects on the web. She took her first coding class with GDI Philly in Fall 2012, and a year later started as a front-end developer at Urban Outfitters, where she mainly works with JavaScript. She continues to participate in the GDI community as a teacher, TA, and student, and when she's not spending her time learning and hacking on web projects, Alexandra works on lots of handmade craft projects and blogs about them here (http://philodendron.co/)!
