Introduction to Javascript & jQuery

NOTE: This is a three day course, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You are paying to attend all 3 days.

Bring headphones!
Session 1: Thursday, May 15th,[masked]:30-8:30pm. (Dinner provided)

Session 2: Friday, May 16th,[masked]:30-8:30pm. (Dinner provided)

Session 3: Saturday, May 17th,[masked]:00-5:00pm. (Lunch provided)

JavaScript is a the language of interactivity on the web. Ever used Google Maps? Clicked on something to make it appear or hide? Seen a slideshow of images? You've used JavaScript!

You'll begin learning to develop interactive websites in this introductory course. We will be covering basic JavaScript and jQuery, as well as dynamic HTML, JSON and APIs. (If you don't know what any of those acronyms mean, don't worry... this is the class for you!)

SPONSORED BY:
DevMountain has graciously offered some great perks & swag for our Javascript class. All attendees of this class will receive:

$500 scholarship for DevMountain's Summer Web/Core or Fall Web/Core      classes (SLC, or Provo)
50% off of DevMountain's online course
Free Javascript: the Good Parts book

HOSTED BY:
Food and space is being generously provided by Instructure:

They have a gorgeous building and a central location near I-215. They are also providing us with dinner Thursday-Friday and lunch on Saturday. We are incredibly grateful for their support!

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Your laptop and charger
• Headphones
• Wifi & power strips will be provided
• If you do not already have Google Chrome or Firefox, install it before class.
• We will be using Sublime Text 2 (http://www.sublimetext.com/2) in class.

If you need help getting your computer set up, we recommend stopping by our Code & Coffee which will likely be a week or two before and have one of our volunteers help get you set up.

INSTRUCTOR:
Brian Holt is presently the redditgifts front-end developer at reddit. This essentially means he gets paid to use JavaScript, CSS, and HTML to help you connect to the world around you, gain deep and meaningful insight, and look at cat pictures for hours. When not saving the world one line of JavaScript at time, Brian loves to ski, mountain bike, trail run, and hang out with his wife and Havanese puppy. Brian is currently a resident of Salt Lake City, UT.

A very special thanks to our teacher, Brian Holt! He will be donating his proceeds from this class to our chapter fund so we can offer scholarships!

POST CLASS QUESTIONS:
Join us at our Hack Night on May 28th to ask follow up after the class. TAs from this class will be available to assist with any questions.

I so wish I could be there for this! Is there going to be another one soon? I've been wanting to sign up for DevMountains fall course, so this would be an awesome opportunity for me to get acquainted with things first,

Crap! I just realized I have a scheduling snafu, even though I've already paid for this course. Is there anyone wanting to go who can't afford it? Could I possibly transfer a ticket to them? (Or could I maybe attend the next one instead?)

    May 12, 2014

    • Melissa O.

If she can transfer the ticket I'd love to go. I didn't think I could get Saturday off initially but now I have it off.

    Hey all,
I know this is a majority female based group but I hope it is okay that I join in as I am just looking to help further my education in the JS dev world.

How old do you need to be to attend this? My eleven year old daughter would like to go if she's old enough. She's been doing code combat and recently went to the open west conference with me.

Hey Jason - if you want to sign up for Treehouse (and its great!) then go to my blog: www.codingchick.com and click on the big green add for Treehouse and you get a deal on signing up. Take care!

      May 12, 2014

    • Brian H.

Treehouse is great. I've look at a lot of their material and my wife has done the HTML/CSS class. It's great.

And there are plenty of adults who can't type very quickly either.

I wanted to look at the DevMountain online course mentioned in the perks section, but can't seem to find it. Can someone post a link? Thanks :)

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the online part. I will talk with our sponsor and give you an update once I know more.

I'm fairly new to Girl Develop It - and am interested in this class, but can no attend the Saturday session.. Is it worthwhile to sign up if I can only attend Thurs/Fri or should I wait for a series like this to be offered again?

    May 6, 2014

    • Stacie F.

Saturday is going to be half of the class, so I wouldn't do it unless you can make all 3 days. If there's enough interest, hopefully we can do another one fairly soon!

      May 6, 2014

  • Sariah M.

I can't make it to this one, but I want to come to the next class!
