Remote Book Club Kick-Off

Details

For our Chapter's 2019 initiative of making our group a more inclusive one, specifically pointed toward intersectional issues, Michele Cynowicz is building up a bookclub list to bring us great conversations around race, class, gender and today's technology. She'll host a remote bookclub conversation once per month in 2019. Depending on the lengths of each book, we may cover a single book over the course of one-or-two months, so 2019 should have us reading & discussing at least half-of-a-book each month, if not an entire book.

Feel free to suggest books!

These remote bookclub sessions will take place on weekday evenings, once per month, from the comfort of your favorite room, library, coffeeshop, etc. We will use a video conferencing app called Zoom, which can run on your desktop, laptop or mobile device.

The first 5 books in the list are:

  1. So You Want to Talk About Race ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35099718-so-you-want-to-talk-about-race )
  2. Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35953464-broad-band )
  3. Technically Wrong: Sexist Apps, Biased Algorithms, and Other Threats of Toxic Tech ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38212110-technically-wrong )
  4. Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28186015-weapons-of-math-destruction )
  5. Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34974754-reset )

We'll host a Remote Bookclub kick-off video conference Wednesday, December 12th, 2018 @ 8pm EST - you will not need to have completed any reading! This will be a chance to meet the group, figure out the video conferencing, discuss the topics, reading cadence and potential future books.

Our first real Remote Book Review meeting will be Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019 @ 8pm EST.

We hope you can join us!
