Saturday meal at Cathedral Kitchen

Details

Cathedral Kitchen (http://www.cathedralkitchen.org) provides fresh meals to some of the poorest people in Camden, six days per week. We will help with the Saturday meal, our shift is 11:30am - 1:30pm. A variety of volunteer duties are available -- help set place settings on tables, work in the kitchen plating food (not cooking), serving food to guests. We will be assigned duties when we get there. Guests enter at 12pm and they must leave by 1pm. After they leave, volunteers help to clean up.

Free, safe/secure parking next to the building.

This kitchen serves an average of 300 guests each day, six days a week, so they use a lot of items and appreciate any donations ... especially plastic forks, Ziploc baggies, napkins, and paper towels. Feel free to bring a donation (not mandatory).

They only take small groups of volunteers, so we are limited to 5 people. No bringing extra people. Please only take a spot if you can really go ... or change your RSVP immediately if your schedule changes.

Details for our shift:

Please arrive by 11:30am. We should be done by 1:30pm.

Wear a t-shirt, jeans or similar, and sneakers. Loose clothing, nothing tight fitting/spandex.

No tank tops or crop tops. No open toe shoes or sandals/flip flops.

Due to health regulations, you will be asked to wear a plastic apron and latex gloves. If you are plating food in the kitchen, you will have to wear a hat or hair net.

Volunteers must be 16 years old.

Free, secure parking next to the building.

Lock valuables/purse in your car, there are no lockers.

About Cathedral Kitchen:

Their mission is to provide essential life services that support the health and well being of those in our community and, in doing so, to affirm each person’s humanity and dignity while guiding them towards self sufficiency.

Founded in 1976 by four altruistic young people, for over three decades the Cathedral Kitchen has been serving meals to the poor and hungry of Camden. What began as a simple ministry offering soup and sandwiches to a few people in need has grown into the largest emergency food provider in the city. In 2009, they provided over 106,000 meals.

The kitchen staff prepares the meals fresh each day, using both purchased and donated food. They also provide meals for off-site locations, including shelters, after-school programs, food pantries and smaller soup kitchens.

After years of planning and fund raising, Cathedral Kitchen moved into a brand new facility in 2008.
