Samos is a beautiful mountainous island, especially green on the northern slopes, with peaks rising to above 1000m, with the highest peak at nearly 1500m.
See the SAMOS photo album for photos of the routes and landscapes.
Paul Harrison who has walked there several times. The base will be Kokkari, an attractive village/resort on the north coast with a quaint harbour area with tavernas, bars etc: it is popular but fairly low-key. Currently there are only flights available on Thursdays from Gatwick: for two people sharing a room, a one-week B&B package holiday costs about £500 each. In addition, return travel to Gatwick will be needed with an overnight stay at Gatwick on the way out since the fights are at 0720.
The walks would include walks from Kokkari on old donkey trails to surrounding hill villages, walks on the coast to deserted beaches (mainly B/B+) with the option of an early morning start for the non-technical but physically demanding ascent of the highest peak from sea level. Cars would need to be hired for some walks. The best walking guide is 'Samos' by Sunflower Books (now out of print but a PDF version for e-readers is available). Typical photos of the walks and landscapes are on the club website (under Samos http://www.meetup.com/Glasgow-HF-Outdoor-Club/photos/27014761/).
Members who indicated an interest in the holiday in response to our previous circular or note in the July newsletter have been invited to book flights and accommodation, only after which will definite places on the holiday be allocated on the website.
These are: Peter Isbister, Eleanor Grieve, Nick Dickens, Maisie & Alistair McCrae, Ruth Lyon, Sunny Huang, Robin Gordon, Adrienne Caldwell, Colin & Alice Nicol, Maura Buchanan, John Moore, Iffat Noor, Mandy K, & Lindsay H.
Other members who would be interested in the holiday if places become vacant later may contact Paul Harrison to go on the reserve list.
Looking for some motivation to get back out to the hills more often.
