December Gophers
Hi London Gophers! ๐Ÿ‘‹ Wow, already December ... how time has flown by! We've had an amazing year of meetups, talks and socialising so what better way to see the year out than continuing with that tradition. This month we will be trialling a new speaker slot, "Foundations of Go", aimed at new and experienced Gophers alike. The format will a number of 5 minute slots with live demos/coding covering everything from "Getting started with Go + VSCode", to "Maps in action", "Defining methods", "Using context.Context", "Working with JSON" and much much more. We will be reaching out to people to help with upcoming sessions, but in the meantime please let us know what sort of topics you'd like to see covered via https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScewvdnAARCdlW1mfbaOmoZYFeja_fsEKwRsiuTd8d5BDZ4fA/viewform If you can't make it to the talks, or you're stuck on the wait-list, join us after the event for some socialising. ๐Ÿ› Foundations of Go See above. โšก๏ธ Wayne Ashley Berry - How to introduce Go into your organisation Some real world tips to make writing Go the most pleasant experience possible within your company or organisation, taken from years of experience introducing Go to companies with large existing codebases. โšก๏ธ Johan Brandhortst - Writing REST services for the gRPC-curious Johan will give a quick background on REST/JSON, gRPC and protobuf and introduce the gRPC-gateway, with a demo showing how easy it is to get started with writing REST services that double as gRPC services. ๐Ÿ—ฃ Chris James - How to not build legacy systems that everyone hates How to make sure that tests are always working for you rather than against you, so that you can keep your software malleable. ๐Ÿป Post Event Social - The Masque Haunt (Just 1min away, over the road from the Pusher offices) If you can't make it to the main event (working late, stuck on the waitlist, that big date) please join all the attendees in the pub for some refreshments. It's a great place to socialise, discuss talks and just hang out with other Gophers ๐Ÿค“. ๐Ÿ† Everyone attending the event will have a chance to win a JetBrains license valid for a year! ๐Ÿ’ผ IMPORTANT JOBS UPDATE ๐Ÿ’ผ If you are looking to mention that you are hiring on the evening (and will be present) please contact us (via [masked]) ahead of meetup the with a link or email address so that we can add you to our jobs slide. This will both streamline the jobs section on the evening and allow Gophers to easily find your information after the event. ๐Ÿ“ฃ If you'd like to give a talk at the future meetups, don't be shy, we are always looking for speakers and speaker mentors that want to share their adventures with Go. Do get in touch! Weโ€™ll be happy to support you and offer advice if needed ๐Ÿ™‚. P.S. We are always looking for sponsors - and venues! - as well. So if you know someone that can help us with the food / beverage budget, we'll be happy to add the name to our sponsors list. Gophers are known to like food and being hydrated.
