The Big Loop - 70 Miles

  • Sep 15, 2013 · 7:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a training ride with distance and hills suitable for slower hill climbers who can ride distance.  We are going to try out some new roads, one of them is the climb to the Pittock Mansion near the end.  Several of us are training for the John Day ride coming up in a few weeks.

Route: We are riding a big loop starting in Raleigh Hills, going to OC, East Portland, Vancouver, North Portland, NW Portland and back to Raleigh Hills.

Time: Be ready to ride at 8:00AM sharp.  We honor those who arrange their schedule to be on time.

RIDE LEADER CONTACT INFO: Jan Westfall[masked] [masked] Please call or email with any questions.

Pace: ~15 mph on the flats.

Distance: 70 miles

Hills: Yep, too many for me!  But, the faster members of the group always wait patiently at the top for the slower climbers.

Attitude: Keep it moving.  Short breaks as needed through out the ride.  We move together as a supportive and encouraging group.

Traffic: Expect normal traffic.

Weather Cancellation Policy: We don't expect a surprise but brutal cold, soupy fog or sideways rain will cancel.

Required: All items you need to change your tire if you get a flat, including a spare tube.  Please carry sufficient water and snacks for the ride.

Mandatory for all riders.

Note: Your RSVP signifies that you agree to the following. Organizers, event hosts and other participants will not be held responsible for any individual at any event. Each rider rides at their own risk and is solely responsible for any damage to their equipment or themselves.

Final Note: RSVP’s cannot include a +1 or Guest. If you choose to bring a friend or family member, they themselves must sign up as a member of NumBumz.

Obey traffic laws and remember you’re a representative of the greater cycling community and should conduct yourself that way on the road.  Please represent us well.

Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. This is a requirement and not a request.

All riders must have their rides in good working order and must bring a flat kit & spare tube on all rides. If there is an issue with proper working or lack of equipment you may be asked to sit the ride out. Please ask for help if you are ill equipped prior to the ride. We will try to help!

All riders must be able to change a flat should they have one or have a way to get picked up (AAA, a friend…). There is often but not always someone on the ride who knows how to help you change your tire so plan accordingly.

Great ride Jan. Thanks so much for leading it. I loved every mile of it or almost every mile. It was a great time and the group of riders were very nice. I met some new riders. It was one of my best rides. We all rode well together. Can't wait for the next ride with you Jan.

Great group to ride with. Nice to ride with Richard and Marlee, first timers on one of my rides. Brad is so ready for the Harvest Century. Cheryl charged every hill as always even after yesterdays climbing binge. Jose told us he has a helmet cam, he just has to figure out how to use it. Get ready for even more photos from him! Ross and I survived two days of hills and distance. Yay!

Just an FYI... expect slow climbing from me tomorrow. I feel today's climbing in the legs. Totally understandable if the speedsters opt out of this for a faster ride elsewhere.

Slow and steady still gets the job done! Feeling all the climbing from today also... So i think I'll be right behind you!

Suggested training route: I don't know about Raleigh Hills to OC, but OC to P-Town is River Road and 17th to Springwater. Not likely the 205 Path, but maybe 122nd-Marine Drive and up the 205 Bridge. To get elevation, continue up Prune Hill with a warm down return westward McGillivary-MacArthur-McMoughlin (henceforth known as the three Mc's). Then south via I-5 Bridge-DeltaPark-Schmeer-Vancouver and west via the Steel. Then a turn left and turn right route surely to test your ability to navigate embedded rail through downtown to arrive at Johnson-Cumberland-Pittock-Barnes-61st-SunsetBikePath-US26-Jefferson-Columbia-Broadway-Terwilliger-Woodward-CouncilCrest-Vista-Park Pl-Kingston-Fairview-Skyline-SchollsFerry. You all could even through in a short detour up Larch since you all will be out that way anyways. ;)
