Leader: Oliver James, thefreebirdleaps@gmail.com, 510-717-9969
This field trip celebrates the release of Oliver's forthcoming book Birds of Berkeley from Heyday Press. It also celebrates the Year of the Bird 2018, and the Great Backyard Bird Count. Signed copies of Oliver's brand new book will be available for sale to participants. 10% of proceeds will be donated to GGAS. Join Oliver James for an easy stroll in Berkeley's Aquatic Park. This field trip is planned to coincide with the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a citizen-science project organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon that gives scientists an annual "snapshot" of global bird populations. Be one of the 160,000 people around the world who will submit their observations to benefit science and conservation!
Our morning will focus on the identification of water birds (e.g. ducks, herons, and gulls) but we will stop to admire any and all birds that may be present. In addition to answering questions about Birds of Berkeley, Oliver will introduce and discuss the online checklist program eBird and participants will have the chance to upload the morning's sightings to the GBBC database.
Family friendly (ages 8+). Limited to 20 participants (register using the link below). Open to all skill levels. Level, paved path w/ restrooms. Rain or shine! Please bring binoculars and a scope if you have optics. If you are interested in learning how to use the eBird app for your iPhone or Android please download the app prior to the start of the field trip. REGISTRATION LINK for this trip:
