Making the Most of Genealogy on your Computer and Online
Long-time GGCS member and Marin Genealogical Society guru Gene Pennington will tell us about an important new development in the Roots Magic Genealogy Program during the October 22 General Meeting at 7 p.m. He’ll also give tips on preserving your family’s privacy if you post family trees online. Gene’s recommended family tree program, Roots Magic, and Ancestry are working together at last. Gene will discuss the basics of them and then demonstrate data syncing the two, along with some tips and hints to help with the “TreeShare” feature. His second topic, “Privacy & Security of Family Trees Online,” will demo privacy settings (Ancestry & MyHeritage) and security concerns over sharing with the public. Q&A time will be included, so bring your questions and concerns about how best to build and protect your family tree data. Gene Pennington has been involved in genealogy for nearly 40 years, researching his own family roots and helping others by giving presentations and classes on many subjects concerning computers and genealogy. He’s active in many genealogical groups. Gene retired from the San Rafael Police Department after 32 years of service, where, in the ’80s, he introduced computers to the department and later introduced laptop computers to other Marin law enforcement agencies, as well as being involved in planning for the Marin Emergency Radio Authority. The meeting is open to the public at a cost of $5.00 for visitors (pay at the door by cash, check or credit card). You get free admission and a raffle ticket if you join the club at the event ($48/yr.). This is sponsored by the Golden Gate Computer Society.
