What is a freethinker?

A freethinker is typically defined as a person who forms opinions about religion on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority or established belief. This usually means that they find it difficult to accept any religious teachings since they generally require a suspension of reason and acceptance of statements based on faith. Faith amounts to asserting the truth of something without evidence and this violates a key principle of freethinking.

There are multiple arguments that can be made in support of religious beliefs (often referred to as apologetics), but none of them has proven to be persuasive or compelling. Each is flawed in some fashion and can be challenged by freethinkers using reason, logic and evidence. You can find a reveiw of the arguments for the existence of god at this page as well as a description of the problems associated with each of them.
