Here to Stay - Film and Panel Discussion on Refugees and Sport
Details
"What every living creature needs is food and protection. But since we are humans and not animals we also need to be part of society in some way."
So states the coaches of FC Lampedusa. A team of refugees sponsored by the Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli. Grand River Union was able to watch FC St. Pauli and meet many of the North American supporters of the club during a friendly match between Detroit City FC and St. Pauli last year and heard about this short film on the relationship between the club and their sponsored club FC Lampedusa.
FC Lampedusa is made up of refugees that live in the city of Hamburg. FC St. Pauli fans saw a need to support these refugees as they looked for a new home and provided a platform for them to play and work.
After showing the film we will have a panel discussion on local refugee experiences and the power of sport in building community.
Cost: $10 to help us cover facility rental. All profits generated will go to local refugee charity.
