It is with great joy to announce that following many months of discussion, Gaia Earthen Technologies has become the first and only CalEarth authorized and sanctioned organization to promote and provide off-site Superadobe earth bag building workshops in the United States. Beyond that Gaia is the designer and builder of several actual earth bag structures, of which information will be provided regularly and freely, to share our experiences with building departments and the permitting process. We’ll welcome volunteers on our builds and will also look for experienced architects, engineers and builders for hire. If interested please contact Erik at or Natallia or join us at
Six day Superadobe workshop (APRIL 21st-APRIL 26th) run by Erik Ven, CalEarth alumuni, lead instructor of Gaia Earthen Technologies - the only CalEarth approved and sanctioned off-site workshop provider in the US.
- Ian Lodge, CalEarth’s site director, comments about Erik:
“If anyone needs a good and dependable …guidance on a project or an extra helpful hand on a pre-existing project then I would like to recommend Erik Ven. Erik has been at Cal Earth for several months now and has had his hand in teaching and building and would be an asset to any project. He is also a good thinker and applies logic to whatever the task at hand resulting in good decisions and right action. Further, he is dependable and consistent!..”

- Through the course of this workshop, participants will learn all the important aspects of basic Superadobe earth building while creating a 8-12 feet dome with two windows and a doorway. The course will introduce the principle of the arch, bagging, waterproofing and plastering techniques. Students will build their own window and door forms, which will immediately be used in the building process. We’ll learn about how to use compass and what wall corbelling is.
By the end of the week you will not just be able to build a dome but also will have built your first one.
