"December Lunch/Lecture: "Blanqui: the French Enlightenment and Communism"

Details

** STILL HAPPENING! Despite the expected snow, we will still hold this event for those who will brave the weather; the Red Line T is nearby. If the snow forecast changes again (snow will be falling all afternoon but will only be 2-4" in Boston over the 12 hours from noon on), we will POST information here. **

Join us in the midst of the winter holiday season as we gather for food and community at the GBH December Lunch and Lecture. Besides good works and community building, another big part of our mission is providing provocative and engaging talks, so we are happy to welcome our guest speaker.

Historian Doug Enaa Greene, author of "Communist Insurgent: Blanqui's Politics of Revolution" will speak on the French revolutionary Louis-Auguste Blanqui, Jacobinism and the Enlightenment. The talk will focus on the importance on the Enlightenment as it unfolded particularly in France in the person of Louis-Auguste Blanqui. Doug Greene will reflect on how this radical Enlightenment thought was a key strand in the history of modern Humanism. He will argue, with Blanqui, that fulfilling the promises of the Enlightenment can only be realized with socialism.

Doug Enaa Greene is an independent historian living in the Boston area, and has been published in Socialism and Democracy, Counterpunch, Green Left Weekly, Open Media Boston, Jacobin and others. He was active in Occupy Boston.

The luncheon will again take place at the India Pavillion in Central Square Cambridge (vegetarian options, only $14 per person for all you care to eat). Parking in Cambridge is via metered street parking, and several garages and lots in Central Square including several just steps away on Green Street. MBTA red line Central Square station and associated bus stops are also within the block.

RSVP here, or via Facebook, or by responding to your email list email, but NOT all three, please, so we can give the restaurant a good sense of our size. Thanks!
