Hola good people 🖖,

GreeceJS is here again with an event full of juice and flavour!

According to many people Prisma is how ORMs should be in the first place... so it was about time we hear all about Prisma straight from the horse's mouth (Spiros is member of the Prisma team^^).

Countless hours have been poured into deciding how on earth to structure our codebase. That's mainly for two reasons. First, because we're indecisive as a species in general and as engineers in particular. Second... because it actually is tricky and hard! Let's discuss structure by type vs structure by feature.

"Turning an ORM into a Platform" by Spiros Martzoukos, Prisma (EN)

Prisma is well-known as an ORM but for the past few quarters the team has been building a data platform around their flagship product in order to enable better developer workflows around the Data Layer and runtime enhancements for production applications. This fundamental product change led to a huge cultural and operational shift for the company, which up to that point had been focused on building an open source tool.

In this talk Spiros is going to (a) speak about the reasons and the reasoning process behind this move, (b) present the new architectural stack, (c) describe what went well and what not, (d) analyze the organizational changes that Prisma had to undergo and the lessons they learned through this process.

About the speaker:

Spiros is a product manager at prisma.io and lives in Athens with his wife and two kids. In the previous 7 years he resided in Berlin where he worked at Contentful, a headless CMS, and Edenspiekermann, a digital design agency. Before becoming a product manager he was a front end developer, who actually liked CSS.

"Structure by Type vs Feature" by Thanos Karagiannis (GR)

Making decisions as a software engineer when structuring an application can get quite tricky sometimes. Especially when there are so many different tools and frameworks out there with their own opinions on how an application's structure should look like. It's time to make our codebase folder structure tell its story no matter what framework or language we are using.

This talk will be a personal review, where we will examine different approaches and practices regarding folder structure so that the next time we are going to introduce a new directory or file there will be a rationale behind our decision.

About the speaker:

Thanos is a software engineer with 10+ years of experience in building web applications, getting his hands dirty with both frontend and backend technologies. He's currently working as a senior software engineer at Simpler leading the frontend chapter. He loves JavaScript. He couldn't imagine a world without espresso. He's a musician playing the keyboard, and this explains why his friends and colleagues call him "maestro". Last but not least, he is a big fan of Formula 1.
